I have encountered a Microsoft Word’ document gets freeze on Mac, Word for Mac stops responding. and document gets freeze on Mac. Sometimes you may have to use the “Force Quit” command to exit the program. I have tried many ways but fail. After several failures, I have found out some solutions those can be very helpful in the proper functioning of Microsoft Word on Mac.

Steps to Recover This Problem

Cleaning Of The Auto Recovery Folder :

Cleaning of the Auto Recovery folder can be beneficial to stop freezing the Microsoft Word. Follow some simple steps.

  1. Please, first visit “Go” menu and click on the “Home”.
  2. Then a drop-down menu will appear and click on the “Documents”.
  3. After that open “Microsoft User Data” and in this drop-down menu open “Office Auto Recovery Mode”.
  4. Remember that you do not have to delete files in this folder. You can copy or move these files to the desktop and test the application.

Download And Install The Latest Update

If above step fails to solve this problem, then download and installation of the latest update can fix the issue. To fix this problem you need to download and install the latest Word update, depends upon them on your version of the program. Open the Microsoft Word, and then click on the “About Word” on the “Help” menu, this will tell you the downloaded Microsoft Word version on your Mac pc. You need to download the latest version and this step can fix the issue.

Check The Document Name

Haven’t you get success by the above step, might be this problem is more severe so this step needs your attention so let’s check it out.

Sometimes your document can contain symbols in your Microsoft Word file, such as the percent, dollar, equal etc characters. Now you are trying to open the file by double-clicking in it but the file does not open. In this case, try to resolve this issue by renaming the file without symbols. Program file can also be downloaded from a website, sometimes an extra symbol can be added by a web browser to the file name. If this is the case, try to use a different browser to access your email, and then download the file again.

Removal Of the Word Preferences

Remove any preferences which were set by you when Microsoft Word was previously installed in your system can be effective in removal of this problem. Note that this removes all customize file that you have made, including the creation of custom dictionaries and keyboard shortcuts, and changes to the toolbars. To remove Word preferences, follow these steps:

  1.  First take an exit from Microsoft Office on Mac.
  2.  Look at the “Go” menu and click Home and open “Library”.
  3.  Keep in mind “Library” folder is hidden in Mac OS X Lion. Hold down the “Option“ key for Mac OS X while you click the “Go” menu.
  4.  Open “Preferences”
  5.  Search the file “com.microsoft.word.plist”, and move the file to the desktop.
  6.  Open Word, and check whether the problem still occurs. If the problem still occurs, exit Microsoft Word, and then restore the file to its original location.
  7.  If you find out a problem is solved, you can move the file to the trash.
  8.  f you do not locate the file, the program is using the default preferences.
  9.  Exit all Microsoft Office for Mac programs.

You can also try for “com.microsoft.word.prefs.plist” and “normal” preferences file same as previous one.

Try to Run in Safe Mode

Safe mode fixes many serious problems multiple times. Exhausted from trying all the options, then this solution may release your tension and provide you the solution to this problem. So run Microsoft Word in Safe Mode.

Check the Involvement of Third-Party Fonts

Sometimes we have installed third-party fonts which are not available in Microsoft Word. We can download explicitly from the internet or any other resources. If you are using third-party fonts, Word for Mac might experience problems with the font that you have installed. Uninstalled these fonts and now open the Microsoft Word on Mac.

I hope these points are helpful to solve this problem.
