On Tuesday, Google declared that its Google Hangouts service is shutting down for G Suite customers in October 2019. Now, this will be followed by Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet.

G Suite is a paid suite of certain Google Apps which is used by companies and organizations. The company has plans to close the hangout for all the users in the year 2020, but it has not been announced officially.

For G Suite administrators, the timeline is a bit more complex and is explained in detail here. But for G Suite users, Chat will start being available on web and mobile in April (though Hangouts will still remain available). From April since September, there are certain features of hangout — such as Gmail integration, Google Voice calls and chatting with external users — will be transferred to Chat, and in October, standard  Hangouts for G Suite will be retired.

There is no exact date on when exactly Hangouts will be retired for all the users; Mashable has stretched out to Google regarding this and will renew this article when we hear from them.

UPDATE: Jan. 23, 2019, 12:16 p.m. CET A Google spokesperson told us the following: "The above dates are specific to G Suite customers and their end-users who use classic Hangouts. We will continue to support consumer use of classic Hangouts, and expect to transition consumers to free Chat and Meet following the transition of G Suite customers. A more specific timeline will be communicated end-users at a later date."
