The new wonders were chosen in 2007 through a contest organized online by a swiss – based new7wonders foundation. More than 100 million votes were cast worldwide from a list of the 21 finalists. The Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal is an ivory white marble mausoleum located on the south bank of the Yamuna river in the city Agra in Uttar Pradesh which is also the biggest state of this country. It is known to be the symbol of love, built by emperor Shah Jahan for his beloved wife Mumtaz Mahal who died while conceiving her 14th child. The construction of this beauty began in 1632 and is said that it lasted for over 20 years and a cost of around 32 million rupees which today is approx. 52.8 billion rupees (827 million U.S dollar). It was designated World heritage sites in yr. 1983. This beautiful site attracts more than 3 million visitors making it one of the top 7 wonders of the world today. The great wall of China

One of the worlds largest construction project, the great wall of china, according to Chinese study is about 13,170 miles (21,200km) in length. It is not a continuous wall but a series of many walls built at different times for different reasons. The parts build by Ming dynasty in 1300s when they were at war with magnolia feel newer. the older ones are dated back to 700bc.  It was built to keep the invaders from crossing its northern borders but the wall largely failed to provide actual security. Some parts of the wall have been destroyed due to erosion and flooding. You can still an amazing walking tour on the wall.

Chichen Itza

Chichen itza was a city built in terminal classic period by Maya people. It was one of the largest Maya cities which flourished in the 9th and 10th centuries which was voted among the 7 wonders of the world in yr. 2007. Many monuments were built. El Castillo (‘The Castle’), a stepped pyramid being the most notable one. INAH, which manages the site, has closed number of monuments to public access. Visitors can surely take a walk around them but can no longer go inside. El Castillo was closed after a woman from California fell to her death in 2006. It is the most visited one of the most visited sites in Mexico. Best time to visit in march. On 21st march, the spring Equinox, witness the serpent effect on EL Castillo.

Roman Colosseum

Roman Colosseum also called Flavian amphitheater is the biggest Amphitheatre ever built in the center of the city of Rome, Italy. The construction begun in AD72 and was completed in AD80. The Amphitheatre was named in Latin after the family named Flauvis. This colosseum can hold up to 50,000 to 80,000 spectators who watched various events. Most notable were gladiator fights and men fighting animals. It feels like a set of gladiator movies once you are in it. Although ruined by earthquakes and stone robbers, it is an iconic symbol of imperial Rome.

Christ the Redeemer

Crist the redeemer is iconic statue of Jesus Christ in the city, Rio de Janeiro. statue was built between 1922 and 1931.  After world war one when some Brazilians feared a “tide of godlessness”. The statue stands 98 feet tall excluding the base which is 26 feet high- and its outstretched arms span 92 feet. The statue is made of reinforced concrete and is covered in 6million tiles that were applied by devout women. It is one of the most famous and also the largest art deco sculpture in the world.

Machu Picchu

Machu picchu, the most impressive site in Peru is said to be built in 15th century. Machu picchu is believed to be constructed as an estate for the inca emperor pachacuti. It was not known to the outside world until American historian Hiram Bingham brought it to international attention in 1911.  It is believed that only 750 people lived here as it was a royal estate. The site itself is an earthquake prone area but the stones in this place bounce through the tremor and the fall back in place, keeping the place intact for years.

Petra, Jordan

Petra, originally known as Raqmu, is a historical city in southern Jordan between the Dead Sea and the Red sea. Petra is believed to be established in  4thcentury BC. The city is carved in sandstone, which changes color with the shifting sun. the color turns bolder and bolder setting the city on fire. The city began to decline as the trade routes shifted and Petra was gradually abandoned. The city was forgotten until a swiss explorer rediscovered it in 1812. It was named among the new 7 wonders of the world in yr. 2007 and is also the most visited sites in Jordan.
