The process of upgrading Windows 8 to Windows 10 is relatively straightforward process so just read this blog carefully to understand the upgrade in a right manner.

Let’s Get Started

Just because it is a pretty simple process but it does not mean you don’t need to do anything before upgrading. To upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 10, you have to do some small tasks to get started. From a time saving and ease of use standpoint, it is quite easy to do a full wipe than importing old files & installing apps in a fresh way.

Verify That Copy of Windows is Activated

One of important thing is you have to find out that current version of window is properly activated or not.  To check if Window 8 is properly activated or not, follow this,

  1. To pull up the Setting search, press Windows and W keys simultaneously.
  2. Move to the search box, type “activated” in it and then open the “See if Windows is activated”.
  3. Alternatively, you can also go through Control Panel to check the status of your operating system.

Backup Your Operating System

Back up your PC at the regular basis as this is another important thing. Before you get started, make a full back up of your operating system. Although the update procedure is non-destructive so you will not run into further problems. At the very least, confirm that you have all your important files backed up.

Consider a full image backup of your PC using Windows built-in System Image Backup or using third party tool like Macrium Reflect. After full image backup, you can restore the image and have your operating system running just like it was when you made the backup.
Turn off third-party antivirus tools There are some third-party antivirus tools that interfere with the Windows Update process so to avoid any kind of interference, just turn them off or uninstall them. You can reinstall Windows 10 version after the updating is completed or if you want to use Windows Defender.

Grab Windows 10 Update Assistant

One other thing to note i.e., download Windows 10 Update tool as this update tool will help you to figure out the right version of Windows. For example, if you are using Windows 32 bit version or Windows 64 bit version then it will provide right version. If you are using Windows 32 bit version and want to move on Windows 64 bit version then you have to perform a clean install. In the same way, if you are using a Home edition then this update tool will update your operating system to Home edition of Windows 10.

Run The Upgrade Installer

When you are ready to upgrade, you have to run the installer tool.

  1. First, you will be prompted to upgrade the PC. To start the upgrading process, choose the option “Upgrade PC now” and then hit Next button. Now the upgrade installer will start to download Windows 10 installation files.
  2. The time of downloading process will depend on your internet connection speed because if you are using a slow internet connection then you have to wait for some time.
  3. Once the downloading finishes, you are prompted to accept the terms of license agreement. Before kicking you to the final confirmation page, the installer will perform the last update check, so don’t worry about this.
  4. Now the installer will automatically choose the largest “what to keep selection” and hence keep your personal files and installed apps at the secure place.
  5. To get started with the installation, tap on “Install”. Alternatively, click on “Change what to keep” link to specify what you want to keep during upgrading Windows 8 to Windows 10.

If You Have Clicked On “Change What To Keep Link” Then You Have To Make Few Choices

  1. Keep personal files and apps  :  By choosing this option, you can retain all personal files, installed applications and current Windows settings.
  2. Keep personal files only  : This option will also help you to retain personal file but all installed applications and current windows settings will get removed. So, you have to reinstall the applications once Windows finishes updating.
  3. Nothing :  After selecting this option, all your personal files, installed apps, and Windows Settings will get removed. Choose the proper option carefully and then hit Next button. Now you will be redirected to the recap screen that you saw in the last step. To get started with the update, click on Install button. During the update, your operating system will reboot a few times. Once updating finishes, you have a chance to perform a little configuration.

Configure Windows After Up-Gradation

After upgrading, when you first sign into Windows you will be asked to configure few things.

  1. First thing is to verify your user account. You can use your previous account or also set a new account.
  2. Secondly, you have to verify some privacy settings.
  3. Third, you have to choose whether you want to turn on Cortana – Microsoft Digital Assistant.
  4. Lastly, you have to choose default applications by clicking on “Let me choose my default apps” links. Now your operating system will check all latest updates and PC will restart. Now you are ready to sign into Windows 10. Check your apps if they are working on upgrade process and plug in your peripherals.
